In Social Entrepreneurship, ‘earned income’ means that customers directly exchange payment for a product, service or privilege sold by the Social Enterprise.

This differs from a ‘charitable gift’ or ‘donation’ (also known as fundraising) where a donors’ gift represents a, more or less, one-way transaction in support of the charity.
